An indoor positioning system to support the development of an intelligent, dynamic evacuation system

The development of intelligent and reliable systems to support rapid evacuation from indoor environments (e.g. public and residential buildings) of people from disastrous accidents such as fire, earthquake and terrorist attacks has attracted great attentions over the past years. Most of current emergency alarming systems can only provide simple, static evacuation instructions. In order to maximise the success of the evacuation operation, it is of critical importance to provide accurate, dynamic information about the location of people and the development of disaster situation.

This project aims at developing an indoor positioning system, in which the location information will be dynamically generated and visualised within 3D models of the indoor environment. Various technologies including Radio Frequency Identification, Wireless Sensor Networks, and Ultra Sensitive GPS will be investigated. Based on the 3D model, disaster situation development and location information of people, optimal evacuation routes can be planned. It is envisaged that ongoing collaboration will support the development of this project.
